08/23/2006 Entry: "GOP Tractor Terrorism in Fresno and Bakerfield California"

Further proof that Republicans do not believe any laws (they don't like) apply to them:

"Some Republicans in the Victory '06 effort to re-elect Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had a king-sized campaign idea: getting huge tractors to drive back and forth today in front of Democratic candidate Phil Angelides' 'front porch' sessions in Fresno and Bakersfield. The tractors were carrying 'Schwarzenegger' campaign signs to highlight the charge that Angelides, the state treasurer, would raise the 'tractor tax' to a Central Valley audience.

"But they forgot one tiny detail: No farmers these, they didn't have the appropriate permits or licenses -- or the required 'pilot' car -- for the big vehicles, which roamed back and forth in the residential neighborhoods.

"Result: In Fresno, the tractor drivers, with 'Schwarzenegger' signs on the big rigs, ended up getting stopped by officials and reprimanded -- and in Bakersfield, they were told to hit the road for the big booboo.

"'Just like Schwarzenegger on his motorcycle,' said Dan Newman, campaign spokesman for Angelides, 'these guys were unlicensed and illegal.'

"The tractor tie-up came as both candidates attended events today in Bakersfield and Fresno.

"The Republican governor was in the valley to accept the endorsement of the California Farm Bureau, which today announced a 'no tractor tax' campaign to protest Angelides' statements that he wants to end the 5 percent sales tax exemption for farm equipment and diesel fuel used on farms.

"Angelides wanted to talk about his plan for middle-class tax cuts, including an increase in the child tax credit, to residents in the two cities.

"Newman said Angelides was at his events when 'two huge tractors started driving back and forth. They were blocking traffic and cops came to explain that they were tearing up the road and blocking access to emergency vehicles. It was really pissing off the residents.'

"Newman said the signs on the tractors indicated they originated from a tractor dealer in Madera -- who is also a Republican donor. His shop is several miles away down the Yosemite Highway.

"That raises the question, Newman said, were the tractors also roaming the state highways without the correct licenses?"

Amazing really. The list of laws evaded and ignored by Republicans is quite long.
